How does Vestibular Physiotherapy work?

Vestibular Physiotherapy is a specialised area of Physiotherapy. Specialist trained Vestibular Physiotherapists are trained to treat problems with dizziness and balance, particularly when they involve disorders of the inner ear and semicircular canals. Vestibular Physiotherapists often treat:

  • BPPV (Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo)
  • Dizzyness (vertigo)
  • Meniere’s disease
  • Vestibular migraines
  • Cervicogenic vertigo (dizziness from neck problems).

Our highly trained Vestibular Physiotherapists will use specific testing procedures to diagnose and treat your condition. They are also trained to diagnose conditions that may require referral to other specialists such as Audiologists, which we also have working in our clinic or an ENT specialist.

At Absolute Health, we have three highly trained vestibular Physiotherapists who treat a range of vestibular conditions in both Nambour and Mooloolaba.

What is BPPV?

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a disorder arising from a problem in the inner ear, where tiny particles become dislodged in the semicircular canals of the inner ear. BPPV is an extremely common condition, and if treated quickly resolves quite quickly and easily.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is triggered by certain changes in head position, such as tipping the head up or down. BPPV should be treated by a specialist trained vestibular Physiotherapist as can increase the risk of falling. People can experience dizziness, a spinning sensation (vertigo), lightheadedness, unsteadiness, loss of balance and nausea.

Other causes of dizziness?

Of course, there are many other causes of dizziness and vertigo, which include (not limited to):

  • Cervicogenic vertigo (this means coming from the neck)
  • Vestibular nerve problems (Vestibular neuritis)
  • Labrinthitis
  • Head injuries
  • Inner ear problems that an audiologist or ENT specialist needs to attend to
  • Other disorders

It is important that if you have a dizziness / vertigo disorder, that you see an appropriately trained vestibular specialist. Our Vestibular Physiotherapists are trained to detect these things and refer you appropriately if we can’t treat the disorder.
